How should I begin seeking knowledge?

Begin with what Allah has made obligatory upon you personally: sound belief, purification, and the prayer. Learn these well before anything else, with a teacher you can ask questions of — books and videos help, but a living teacher corrects what you cannot see yourself.

Our Foundations path and weekly halaqah exist exactly for this first stage. Come as you are; no background is assumed. And Allah knows best.

'Aqīdah

What is tawḥīd, in simple terms?

Tawḥīd is to single out Allah alone — in His lordship over creation, in worship, and in His most beautiful names and attributes. It is the message every prophet was sent with, and the meaning of lā ilāha illa Allāh: none has the right to be worshipped except Allah.

It is not an abstract idea but a way of living: hoping in Him, fearing Him, relying on Him, and directing every act of worship to Him alone. And Allah knows best.

Worship

I have missed years of prayers. Where do I start?

Start today, with the very next prayer — do not let what has passed keep you from what remains. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance; He loves those who return to Him, however long they were away.

As for the past, the path back differs from person to person, so speak with one of our teachers about your situation — and know that the door you are standing at is one Allah Himself has opened for you. And Allah knows best.

Worship

How do I keep khushū' (presence of heart) in prayer?

Prepare before you begin: make wuḍū' attentively, walk to the prayer calmly, and pause a moment before the takbīr to remember Who you are standing before. Within the prayer, understand what you recite — even learning the meaning of al-Fātiḥah transforms it.

Khushū' grows gradually, like anything the heart learns. Be patient with yourself and keep returning your attention each time it drifts; that returning is itself worship. And Allah knows best.

Qur'ān

Is it too late for me to learn the Qur'ān as an adult?

It is never too late. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'ān and teach it" (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī) — and he did not limit that to the young. Among the most beloved students in every Qur'ān circle are those who began late and came with longing.

Our recitation sessions take learners from the alphabet upward, at every age. The one who struggles with recitation receives a double reward, as the Prophet ﷺ taught. Start where you are. And Allah knows best.

The Heart

I keep sinning and feel hopeless. What do I do?

Hopelessness is not humility — it is a whisper meant to keep you from returning. Allah says: "Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Sūrah az-Zumar 39:53). Every time you fall, repent again; repentance wipes out what came before it.

Also change what surrounds the sin: the company, the time, the place where it finds you. And bind yourself to good company — hearts are carried by the gatherings they keep. And Allah knows best.

Family

My family resists my practice of the religion. How should I behave?

With more kindness, not less. Nothing argues for the beauty of this religion like your improved character: patience when provoked, service without being asked, gentleness in disagreement. Hearts open slowly, and they open to conduct before words.

Keep your obligations to Allah firmly and without apology, but choose your battles in everything beyond them. Make du'ā' for your family by name — guidance is in Allah's hand, not yours. And Allah knows best.

Character

How do I guard my tongue from gossip at work and among friends?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent" (agreed upon). Prepare a quiet exit before you need it: change the subject, excuse yourself, or say a fair word about the person being discussed.

If you slip, seek forgiveness for the one you spoke about and resolve anew — and remember that leaving a gathering of backbiting is not rudeness; it is protecting both your heart and theirs. And Allah knows best.

Du'ā & Dhikr

Which adhkār should I hold onto daily, if I can only manage a little?

Hold to the morning and evening remembrances — even a short, consistent selection — and the adhkār after each prayer. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small.

Our downloadable adhkār booklet gathers the essentials with translation. Begin with three or four you understand deeply, rather than many recited emptily. And Allah knows best.

New to Islam

I've just embraced Islam. What are my first steps?

Congratulations — may Allah keep you firm. Your first steps are few and gentle: learn the prayer piece by piece, learn to purify yourself for it, and find companionship that reminds you of Allah. Everything else can come gradually; the religion was revealed over twenty-three years for a reason.

Come to any of our circles and introduce yourself — we will pair you with someone who can walk with you through the first months. You are not meant to do this alone. And Allah knows best.

These are brief general answers, not rulings on personal circumstances. For anything specific to your situation, speak with our teachers at any circle or write to us.

Carrying a question?

No question is too small or too shy. Write to us and one of our teachers will reply — privately, or here if it benefits others.
